How to Access Library Databases

How to Access Library Databases:

1. Go to the library's website and click on the orange "Research & Learning" button and then on the "Articles, Research & Information" button.

2. From the A-Z Databases list, you can use the subject drop-down menu to filter the list by subject, or you can find the database you are seeking alphabetically.

3. If you are accessing these databases from outside of the library, you may be prompted to enter your library card barcode number and 4-digit PIN.

Consumer Reports

Searching Consumer Reports

  • Click Advanced Search underneath the search box on the main page.
  • Type “Consumer Reports” in the first box and use the drop-down menu to the right to change from All Fields to Journal title/source.
  • In the second box, type your topic (using only one or two keywords is best). You can also add additional search terms in the third box or click Search to see your results.

  • On the results page, click the All Filters button below the search box (see image below) to further narrow your search by factors such as date.
  • The date and issue information for each article will be listed under the article name and description.

  • To view the article, click the Access options button and choose either Online full text or PDF. Note: the online full text version does not include the pictures originally printed in the magazine.
  • The tools at the top of the article page will allow you to download download icon, share share icon, or print email icon

Browsing Back Issue

  1. Click Advanced Search underneath the search box on the main page.
  2. Type “Consumer Reports” in the first box and use the drop-down menu to the right to change from All Fields to Journal title/source. Then click Search.
  3. Click the All Filters button below the search box and set the date range for the month you wish to view.
  4. Your search results will list each individual article that was published in your chosen month’s issue.

Get Started

Access Hoopla on your mobile device with the Hoopla Digital app or through your computer web browser. Create a free account with your library barcode number and email address.

From a Mobile Device: Install the Hoopla Digital app on your iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire device.

From a Computer: Click the Hoopla link below or go to hoopladigital.com.

Step 1. Search for the Hoopla Magazine BingePass

  • Swipe left on the format buttons at the top of your screen and select the BingePasses button OR type "magazines" into the search bar.

Step 2. Borrow

  • Select the hoopla Magazines BingePass.

  • To see what magazine titles are available with the BingePass before you borrow it, click on "What Titles Are Included?"
  • To mark this as a Favorite for easy access in the future, click on the heart symbol to the left of the Borrow button.
  • Click the Borrow button. This will use 1 of your 5 monthly borrows. You will get 7 days of unlimited access to this collection of magazines.

Step 3. Read

  • After borrowing the BingePass, click on Play Titles.
  • Type a magazine title into the search bar or scroll through the list of magazines until you find one that interests you.
  • Tap on the cover of a magazine to open that particular issue, or tap on View Issues to see all available issues of that magazine.

  • Read the magazine page-by-page by swiping left on your screen.  You can zoom in and out of the page by pinching your fingers.
  • While reading, tap the Listen button Listen button in the top right corner to have the article read out loud to you.
  • Tap the Contents button in the lower left corner to skip to a particular article in that issue or to exit the magazine.

  • Click on the Browse button to the left of the search bar and then click on BingePasses.

Step 2. Borrow

  • After opening a magazine, click the arrows on the left and right of the screen to move from page to page.  Click the Zoom button to zoom in and out, or the Listen button to have the article read aloud.

  • Hover your mouse over the menu on the left side of your screen to see additional options. Click Thumbs to quickly scroll through thumbnails of the pages. Click Contents to jump to a specific article in the issue. Click Save my place to bookmark a particular page. Click Download PDF to save a PDF of this issue to your device.

General OneFile (Gale)

Using Gale General OneFile

  • To utilize General OneFile, type your query in the Search field, choose Advanced Search for more search options or begin browsing by topic. Basic search bar and link to advanced search
  • You can also click on the Search Tool buttons on the main page to use the Topic Finder, Subject Guide Search, or Publication Search. The article’s webpage provides publication information.

  • You have the option to listen to an audio version of an article or download the mp3 recording by clicking the listen button. listen button

  • The cite button cite button allows you to create a citation for the article in multiple citation styles.

Popular Magazines (Gale OneFile)

Search and Read an Article

  • Type your query in the Search field, or choose Advanced Search for more search options.
  • Click on an article title to read the text of the article (no images from the article are available).

Search by Publication Title and Date

  • On the homepage, click Go to Publication Search

  • Type a magazine title into the search bar to see if it is available, or click List All Publications to browse an alphabetical list of available publications.
  • After clicking on a publication title, use the drop-down box to select a year, and then click on the date you wish to view. You will be shown a list of available articles published on the date you select.
