What is OverDrive/Libby?

OverDrive provides access to thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks. Borrow up to eight titles at a time and place up to sixteen on hold. Titles are automatically returned at the end of their lending periods, so you never have to worry about late fees!

Libby is the mobile app for OverDrive, available on iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire devices.

Who Has Access?

Resident cardholders and Lifetime cardholders.

You can sign in with your library barcode number and 4-digit PIN.

How to Use the Libby App

Get StartedLibby app logo

  1. Download the Libby app on your Android, iOS, or Kindle Fire device. You can also use the Libby app on your browser at Libbyapp.com.
  2. Tap Yes to get started and then tap Guess My Library to use your location to find your local library or tap Search for a Library to search by name, city, or zip code.
  3. Tap Sign In With My Card. Enter your library card barcode (back of card). Tap Next and enter your 4-digit PIN. Tap Sign In.

Navigation

You will use the navigation icons on the bottom of your screen to move around Libby.

To add labels to the navigation icons, tap Menu then tap Navigation and Labeled Icons.

Borrow Titles

  • Tap Library Icon

  • OR tap SearchLibby search iconand type an author name, book title, or series title into the search box at the top of the screen. You can then select a search suggestion or tap Libby search icon in the search bar to see all results.
  • Tap a book cover for more information about that title.
  • Use the Filter button Libby filter icon at the top of the Search Results page to refine your results by format, availability, subject, and more.
  • Tap Borrow to check out a title immediately, or tap Place Hold to be added to its wait list.

Read Titles

  • After borrowing a book, tap Open Book. Libby will ask you where you would like to read this book. To continue reading it in the Libby app, tap Libby.

  • To set Libby as your default choice for reading books, tap Menu and then Read Books With and choose Libby. All of your books will now open automatically in Libby.

  • Tap Shelf Icon

Description automatically generated to view your Loans (borrowed items). Tap on the book cover for any of your loans to read that book.

eAudiobooks

  • To distinguish between an eBook and an eAudiobook, look for the Headphones symbol below the book cover. Libby also includes the length of the audiobook.

Renew

  • Titles can be renewed within 3 days of their expiration as long as there is no wait list.
  • Tap Shelf Libby shelf iconto view your Loans (borrowed items).
  • Tap Manage Loan to the right of the book you would like to renew. Tap Renew.

Return

  • Titles automatically return at the end of their lending periods.
  • To return a title early, tap Shelf Libby shelf iconand then tap Manage Loan to the right of the book you would like to return. Tap Return Early.

Manage Holds

  • Tap Shelf and then tap Holds at the top of your screen to view your holds and their estimated wait times.

  • Tap Manage Hold to suspend that hold until a later time, or to cancel it.

  • You can also tap on on the Actions button in the top right to suspend all of you holds at once.

You can use filters on Libby when browsing or searching to view titles by a particular format, availability, subject, and more.

Apply a Filter

  1. Tap Library Libby library icon to browse for books, or tap SearchLibby search icon
  2. Tap the filter icon Libby Filter Iconto filter titles by format, subject, availability, language, and more.

Pin or Remove a Filter

  1. You can pin a filter to apply that filter to all your browsing and searching in Libby until you choose to remove it.
  2. First, apply a filter. Then tap on the applied filter and choose Pin Filter or Remove Filter.

Recommend a Title with Deep Search

1. Tap Search and enter an author name, book title, or series title.

2. From the Search Results page, tap the Filter button Libby Filter Icon. Toward the bottom of the filter options, you should see the Deep Search option. Turning this on will show you titles that Manatee Library does not own.

3. For titles that we do not own, you can tap Notify Me. This alerts our Collection Development Librarian that you are interested in us purchasing that book.

4. When you select Notify Me for the first time, you'll be prompted to turn on your notifications so that you get an alert if we buy this eBook. You can update this in your settings at any time.

Kindles & eReaders

Get Started

  • Kindle Fire: Install the Libby app directly onto your Kindle Fire.
  • Kindle E-Ink: You must first install the Libby app onto your phone or other mobile device. Alternatively, you can use OverDrive through your web browser.
  • NOOK & Other eReaders: For NOOK tablets and eReaders compatible with Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), you must first access OverDrive through the web browser of your computer.

Note: Not all OverDrive/Libby books are available in Kindle format or other eReader compatible formats. Additionally, eAudiobooks cannot be sent to a Kindle or eReader.

Read on Kindle E-Ink Devices

  • Browse or search for books in Libby. Tap Borrow to check out a book.
  • After borrowing a book, tap Read With and then tap Kindle.

  • You'll be taken to Amazon's website. You may be prompted to sign into your Amazon account.
  • Tap Get Library Book. The book will appear in all Kindle apps and devices associated with your Amazon Account.
  • If the book is not appearing in your Kindle, check that your Kindle is connected to the internet.
  • To set Kindle as your default choice for reading books, tap Menu and then Read Books With and choose Kindle. All borrowed books will default to the Read Now With Kindle option.

Read on NOOK or Other eReaders

  1. Browse or search for books in OverDrive. Click Borrow to check out a book.
  2. After borrowing a title, click Download EPUB ebook to add the book to Adobe Digital Editions. When prompted, authorize ADE with a free Adobe ID. To transfer the title to your eReader, plug your device into your computer with your USB cable, then open the Library View in ADE (click the Library button in the top-left corner, if needed). From there, drag and drop the title into your eReader, which should appear on the left under Devices.

Renew

  • Titles can be renewed within 3 days of their expiration as long as there is no wait list.
  • In Libby, tap Shelf and then tap Manage Loan to the right of the book you would like to renew. Tap Renew.
  • In OverDrive, click My Account and then Loans. Click Renew underneath the book information.

Return Early on Kindle

  • Kindle books can only be returned early through your Amazon Account, the Kindle app, or your Kindle device.
  • Go to Content Library on your Amazon Account. Click Books. Locate the title you’ve borrowed and click Return this book to the right of the title. This will remove it from your Kindle and Libby.

You can apply filters to only view Kindle or EPUB compatible books.

Apply Filters in Libby

  1. Tap Library Libby library icon to browse for books, or tap Search
  2. Tap the Filter button Libby Filter Icon.
  3. Scroll down until you see "Read With..." Tap on "Kindle," "EPUB," or "PDF."

Pin or Remove a Libby Filter

  1. You can pin a filter to apply that filter to all your browsing and searching in Libby until you choose to remove it.
  2. Tap the applied filter and then tap Pin Filter or Remove Filter.

Apply Filters in OverDrive

  1. Click Search OverDrive search icon in the upper right and enter your search term(s) in the search bar, or choose a subject or collection to browse.
  2. Use the filters on the left side of your screen to narrow your results.
  3. Click on "Ebooks" and then click on "Kindle Book" or "EPUB Ebook" to apply those filters.

How to Use OverDrive on a Computer

Get StartedOverDrive Logo

  • Click the OverDrive link below, then click the Sign In button at the top right of the page. Enter your library barcode number (back of card) and 4-digit PIN.

Borrow Titles

  1. Click Search OverDrive search icon in the upper right and enter your search term(s) in the search bar. To search by multiple criteria, click Advanced.
  2. From the search results, click on a book cover for more information about that title. Click Borrow to check out a title immediately, or Place a Hold to be added to its wait list.

Read Titles

  • After borrowing a title, click Read now in browser to begin reading immediately from your computer in OverDrive Read.

View Your Loans & Holds

  1. Click on the Books iconOverDrive books iconor the My Account button in the top right.
  2. From this page, you can view your Loans (titles you have borrowed).
  3. To view your holds, tap Holds on the left. You can see the estimated wait time left for each of your holds underneath the book title. To cancel a hold, click Remove. To suspend a hold until a later date, click Suspend Hold.

Renew

  • Titles can be renewed within 3 days of their expiration as long as there is no wait list. Simply click My Account and then Renew underneath the book you would like to renew.

Return

  • Titles automatically return at the end of their lending periods.
  • To return a title early, Click on My Account and then click Return  underneath the book you would like to return.
